It’s 2023 and Homestead High has just won their state semi-final game 42-35 versus Jones Highschool (Orlando) to advance to a state championship game. The Broncos had been dominant all season while being led by University of Oklahoma commit WR Cortez Mills and standout senior QB Joshua Townsend. Fast Forward to 2024, Townsend has graduated and so have many other key contributors, but Mills and returners remain with a team that had such high expectations going into this season but have gotten off to a cold start. The Broncos are 1-2 in their first three meetings after last season.
Getting to the bottom of this less then stellar beginning is very nuanced. Is It the play-calling? Is it the lack of playmaking? Is it just a rough patch? Some would say it’s a combination of all those things listed. The good news is it’s only been three weeks for the Broncos, and they have a ton of room for improvement. Do we see a turnaround occurring? It depends.
A turnaround for this team would have to start with the establishment of the run game. That needs to open the Broncos’ weapons on the outside in the form of softening up the opposing defense. As you have probably noticed we haven’t said a thing about the team’s defense. Reason being? Because it’s been stellar. Outside of last night they had held their opponents to a total of 17 points. Last night was a huge sign of life for this squad who is hoping to make a deep run this season with the team capturing their first win versus Vero Beach (0-3).
